Anodized Aluminum Labels and the Advantages of Colored Metal Printing

Thanks to its light weight and workability, aluminum is one of the most widely used labeling materials in industry. However, bare aluminum can oxidize and dull over time; that's why nearly all quality aluminum labels go through an anodizing process.

What Is Anodizing, and How Does It Work?

Anodizing is the controlled oxidation of an aluminum sheet in an electrolytic bath, forming a hard, porous protective layer on its surface. This layer acts as a natural shield against corrosion and dramatically increases paint retention compared to bare aluminum surfaces.

How Does Colored Printing Become Permanent?

The microscopic pores formed during anodizing absorb special metal dyes, trapping the color just beneath the surface. The pores are then closed through a "sealing" process, making the color permanent. Colors obtained this way — red, blue, black, gold and green — stay fade-free for far longer against sunlight and friction than paints applied directly to the surface.

Which Applications Should Use It?

Anodized aluminum is an ideal solution for asset/inventory labeling, model and serial number plates, safety warning signs and indoor device labeling. For applications directly exposed to salty seawater or constant acidic vapor, we recommend stainless steel.

Which Colors Last Longer?

Dark colors (black, navy, maroon) generally fade less under the sun than light colors. Bright yellow and red are somewhat more sensitive to UV light.
